Product Description

A Dynamite Color

We are excited to introduce a new natural color for fly tiers: Chili Pepper. Consider it a mix between the popular light barred ginger and Cree (and/or dark barred ginger and cree). It is a very versatile color that can be used in many patterns. The ginger color can range from light to dark. Alike Cree, you will spot feathers with up to 5 different colors on one, though most feathers typically have 2-3 colors. We particularly like the vibrant colors. And most importantly, the fish LOVE flies tied from Chili Pepper!

You won't find Chili Pepper anywhere else. Developed by, and exclusive to, Clearwater Hackle. It is still quite rare.

How the name "Chili Pepper" was born.

It first started as a fly, and an effective one at that. Tony Spezio made some modifications to Bob Root's Chili Pepper fly, and then taught Denny Conrad of Conranch Hacle the pattern. Denny couldn't find the same quality of body material. The new "Root Beer" material was okay but not the same. The original had some dun in it, and then Denny had a light bulb go off in his head. What if he bred a cree-like color with a bit of dun in it? His first try was a success and he had the color.

Denny sent Tony this new color, and Tony tied with it at a prestigious fly tying event. It generated a lot of interest. He was talking to a well-known author about the cape, and mentioned how the feathers remind him of chili pepper. And the name stuck. This color, and fly, has caught fish all over the USA and Alaska.

  1. Chili Pepper #1 cape 5 Star Review

Posted by on 31st Jan 2014

I like the color and the color variations within the cape. It's a dark reddish brown with lighter spots throughout. Hackles are stiff, stems are thin, the length of the feather is good-its an excellent product. It's the color that makes it really stand out.
